After talking about worship last week and making the point that it’s not just about singing songs, I’d like to add that songs do play a big part in worship. There is something about music that really touches the human soul. And I think that comes from God.
Here are a couple of my favorite worship songs.
King of Kings
King of Kings tells the simple truth of the gospel in a way that really impacts me. The lyrics are:
VERSE 1:
In the darkness we were waiting
Without hope without light
Till from heaven You came running
There was mercy in Your eyes
To fulfil the law and prophets
To a virgin came the Word
From a throne of endless glory
To a cradle in the dirt
CHORUS:
Praise the Father
Praise the Son
Praise the Spirit three in one
God of glory
Majesty
Praise forever to the King of Kings
VERSE 2:
To reveal the kingdom coming
And to reconcile the lost
To redeem the whole creation
You did not despise the cross
For even in Your suffering
You saw to the other side
Knowing this was our salvation
Jesus for our sake You died
VERSE 3:
And the morning that You rose
All of heaven held its breath
Till that stone was moved for good
For the Lamb had conquered death
And the dead rose from their tombs
And the angels stood in awe
For the souls of all who’d come
To the Father are restored
VERSE 4:
And the Church of Christ was born
Then the Spirit lit the flame
Now this gospel truth of old
Shall not kneel shall not faint
By His blood and in His Name
In His freedom I am free
For the love of Jesus Christ
Who has resurrected me
Verse 3 really hits me hard. The imagery of the angels in awe and holding their breath as the resurrection unleashed the eternal forgiveness and reconciliation of humanity back to God just hit me hard. Realize that there is no forgiveness for angels. Those that followed Satan are damned. Yet God made a way for humans through the sacrifice of Jesus.
That’s powerful.
For the longest time, I couldn’t hear or sing this song without weeping. I mean seriously, I’d be standing there in church with tears in my eyes, unable to control myself. It was that way for a couple years. It doesn’t happen as much any more, but I still choke up.
Same God
This last Sunday, we sang Same God in church and it’s a great example of a worship song. Remember when we talked about worship how I said that just simply repeating back to God what he has done is a form of worship. Same God does this for the whole song and then basically says, “You’re the same God now as you were then, so I know that you have the power to do these things for me, too.”
The lyric for Same God are:
I’m calling on the God of Jacob
Whose love endures through generations
I know that You will keep Your covenant
I’m calling on the God of Moses
The one who opened up the ocean
I need You now to do the same thing for me
O God my God I need You
O God my God I need You now
How I need You now
O Rock O Rock of ages
I’m standing on Your faithfulness
I'm calling on the God of Mary
Whose favor rests upon the lowly
I know with You all things are possible
I'm calling on the God of David
Who made a shepherd boy courageous
I may not face Goliath
But I've got my own giants
You heard Your children then
You hear Your children now
You are the same God
You are the same God
You answered prayers back then
And You will answer now
You are the same God
You are the same God
You were providing then
You are providing now
You are the same God
You are the same God
You moved in power then
God move in power now
You are the same God
You are the same God
You were a healer then
You are a healer now
You are the same God
You are the same God
You were a Savior then
You are a Savior now
You are the same God
You are the same God
You freed the captives then
You’re freeing hearts right now
You are the same God
You are the same God
You touched the lepers then
I feel Your touch right now
You are the same God
You are the same God
I’m calling on the Holy Spirit
Almighty River come and fill me again

Yes! We sing those in my church also. Thanks for posting the lyrics. One of my favorites that we never sing is "They will know we are Christians by our love", I wish that one would make a comeback. Wikipedia says that it originated from how non-believers used to describe Christians in the early Church "behold how they love one another".
We sing this at church. It’s new to me, since I last attended church as a child. I can’t get through it without crying tears of profound gratitude. Gratitude for Christ’s death on the cross so that we may have eternal life. So much evil in the world, yet He loves us all.
